Sessions often include woodworking, gardening, cooking, games or simply spending time chatting over a warm cuppa and a biscuit. Activities are flexible and shaped around the interests of the group or the individual.
The Men’s Group is a small, welcoming weekly group where men can socialise, take part in hands-on activities and support their mental wellbeing in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Members of the Men’s Group are actively involved in Beamish Museum’s annual Horticultural Show, working together to grow plants and produce that can be entered into the show. The Horticultural Show is held in partnership with the North East Horticultural Society and celebrates homegrown vegetables, flowers, crafts and traditional skills, with entries judged as part of a friendly competition.
Being involved in the show gives group members the opportunity to work towards a shared goal, develop horticultural skills and feel part of a wider museum and community event. It also reflects the strong heritage links between gardening, allotments and North East mining communities, where growing food and tending gardens were an important part of everyday life.
Taking part can help build confidence and pride, whether that is growing produce, helping prepare entries or supporting others in the group.
