Traditions of Christmas

Come visit a household preparing for Christmas in a time when celebrations were simpler, gifts homemade and children hoped to find an orange and a handful of nuts in their stocking.

In this activity children will make their own peg doll decoration to take home for their loved one.  They will play old fashioned parlour games and listen to storytelling by the fireside.  The lady or gentleman of the house will lead the festivities, making sure that everyone enjoys themselves.

Through this activity, children will

  • Gain a better understanding of how Christmas was celebrated in the past.
  • Explore the differences and similarities between Christmas in the past and now.

The activity takes place at 1820s Pockerley Old Hall, which will be decorated for Christmas in keeping with a home in the 1820s.
