Victorian Lesson

Costumed staff member next to blackboard in 1900s Pit Village school.

Experience a traditional lesson of reading, writing, arithmetic and drill.

Children will sit in rows and use slates and pencils or pen and ink (depending on their age) to do their work. Smart, sensible and silent – they will be expected to behave as though they were Victorian pupils (although a degree of flexibility will be employed). Any punishment will be discussed but not shown and the activity will finish with an opportunity to ask questions. The activity is ideal for any groups exploring the similarities and differences between school now and school in the Victorian period.

Season: All year
