Volunteering with the Health and Wellbeing Service

Why volunteer with us?

Our volunteers are a valued part of the Health and Wellbeing Service. They help us create welcoming, safe and supportive spaces where people can connect, learn new skills and improve their wellbeing.

Volunteering with us is about being part of a friendly team and supporting people to feel included, confident and valued. Many volunteers tell us they enjoy the sense of community, purpose and connection that comes from being part of the service.

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers support sessions in a variety of ways, including:

  • Helping set up and tidy activity spaces
  • Supporting group activities such as crafts, gardening or music sessions
  • Welcoming participants and helping them feel comfortable
  • Chatting and socialising with group members
  • Supporting trips or walking groups when needed
  • Helping create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere

Volunteers do not provide therapy or personal care. Staff are always present to lead sessions and provide support.

What can you expect from volunteering with us?

You can expect:

  • A warm and welcoming team environment
  • Clear guidance and support from staff
  • The chance to learn new skills
  • Opportunities to meet new people
  • The chance to make a meaningful difference to someone’s day

We want volunteering to feel positive, supportive and enjoyable.

Time Commitment

We understand that people have different availability.

  • Some volunteers help weekly
  • Some help occasionally
  • Some support specific projects or events

We will always talk to you about what works for you.

Training and Support

All volunteers receive:

  • Induction and introduction to the service
  • Ongoing support from staff
  • Opportunities to learn about dementia awareness, mental health and wellbeing approaches
  • Guidance on communication and supporting participants

You will never be expected to do anything you are not comfortable with.

Who is volunteering with us suitable for?

Volunteering may suit people who:

  • Enjoy working with others
  • Are patient, kind and reliable
  • Are interested in heritage, wellbeing or community work
  • Want to gain experience in health, heritage or community sectors
